Gayom:A superstitious dictator (part one).

As I have mentioned before.. gayoum have been a very superstitious person. He have done many things in this way. Many of these things are funny for most of us who are not superstitious. Many are just stories made up by hate mongers.(which I believe might contain a certain amount of truth in it). Also there are things which are evident and cannot be regarded as a mere conspiracy theory...or hate-gossip.
One such example is the monuments and public areas which have been built(specially in the capital Island..Male') within his 28 long brutal years of presidency in Maldives(or shall i say...as the dick of this dictratorship?).In this First Part of our series we would have a look at the 'jumhooree binaa' (or the republican monument).to which taxi drivers in Male' calls 'guiburu' or 'the fecal round'.

About 2 or 3 years back I got some information which I couldnt believe at first...I was a student at that time , at night and any free time I always go and work at this photocopy shop (Its not just photo copying..but designing printing binding laminating and all..) One night some one I knew...came with a lot of papers to make photo copies...I was surprised to find out that it was some historical articles which reveals the brutality of this current government...So after asking him I made some copies for me also..in that was something which looked like the jumhooree binaa..but it was a graphic drawing with something written beneath it...it read

"The God of Protection (Shar Chi),Yin Fire,The Snake (Killing Look)

Shar Chi is an ancient Chinese goddess whose symbol was a sword tied by a snake (yin fire or killing look the Shar chi),modern chinese had changed this symbol to an armed rifle tied by a snake. If this goddess is placed some where..she will protect the owner of the place from all killing looks and evil powers."

And below it was written some website related to feng shui..I think he wrote this after taking information from that website...( he had many other papers attached to this paper on top.but before we go to that ..lets see what this jumhooree binaa is..in detail...here's gayom posing infront of the jumhooree binaa...(note:the gayom is not real)

Does this(above) look like a hungaanu dhooni(shown in the pic below below)as gayom claims??!!??
The gayoms explanation for what the monument symbolizes is a 'Hungaanu dhooni'.(Some kinda steering wheel.used in traditional Maldivian dhoni-vessels..It is usually operated by using the legs)
He says this 'Hungaanu dhooni' represents the steering wheel of this nation (Qaumee nau or 'the ship of this nation' as he calls it)..and he somehow links it to the republican form of government in Maldives.(dunno how the hell he does all this!!!)

What you see here is a graphic image of the jumhooree binaa...

What you see in green colour is the rifle...it is pointing downwards ...Something like this..
And what you see in green color is ...something like this..

...I dont think any more explanation is needed about what the monument is...but about its (supposed) effect....or the beliefs related to it...i saw something from a fengshui book last week...it was...this..

It says:

"The snake.
Coiled at the center, alert, stable, and ready to act in a flash, the snake is protected by the four outlying creatures.but also able to direct them.Like the general of an army.it recieves information from all directions and is able to draw on the special qualities of the forces at its command to take timely and wise action."
The monument is located near the national security services (nss) headquarters,Islamic centre and mosque,Public gathering area (Jumhoorree maidhaan),And ex-sultan's palace of the maldives (now sultan park). It took sooo many days to build this monument...and it ... was entirely covered during construction... only nss army men were involved in constructing it...the metal works were done at the Faculty of Engineering Technology (FET) by students. The designer was purportedly an executive level member of the AIMA constructions company.
He was on 'Heyyaambo' tv show for being..'such a creative designer'.If this is "SIMPLY NOT TRUE"..can gayom give another explanation for what the "Jumhooree binaa" symbolizes...(which makes sense!!!?!!)....I dont think he can!

Well, i guess this is a good explanation, with genuin proofs. Thank u for ur sincere work. Are we still gonna keep Gayom in power? Surely his 'manthiri binaa' has no powers over Allah's Powers. So why not we start with Allah's will to destroy this sick man who does shirk. Curse be upon Gayom and his 'manthiri binaa'

For your information, the structure what we call as the "Jumhooree Binaa" was designed by an architect from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. His work was selected amongst many competitors.

Like "V" said, "you are reading too much into this silly fountain"

Personally I dont like Maumoon and his policies, but your theory about this monument ridiculous. Ridiculous not because Maumoon believes in superstition... ridiculous because I know the real story behind the monument and it cannot be associated with any of your claims.

This monument was designed by Fairooz of Naushad Arts (When he used to work with Naushad). The final output you see infront of the Islamic Center is the result of endless hours of experimenting with CorelDraw pentool and nodes by Fairooz. I was there when worked on that thing. He never intended to abstract "Hungaanu"... he was simply following his instincts to come up with something aesthetic (from his point of view) for a monument. When he was asked to give a speech on the day of "unfolding" he literally scratched his head and got panicked... and came up with the "hungaanu coverup" ... It doesnt have any superstitious intentions and is a meaning-less piece of work which doesnt even have any artistic value (unlike claimed by its creator)

Once again... like "V" said... you are reading too much into this silly fountain

i know of this story of jumhoori binaa at the time of building the binaa. you are exectly correct and that is what gayyoom have created. but it is not becuase of this binaa gayyoom stil in power. its because he have corrupted too many of us, maldivian in his master plan to be in power. but slowly and surely he will loose his power and fade away all his black majic.

Frankly, speaking it is not that slow the dictator is getting all naked infront of the entire public and the world. soon he will go into history with very trible & aguly name. in fact his family and relation will not wish to live any more by than.

for so many times ive been wondering what it actually represents. and no one has been able to give me an answer. Most dont know or like u have said, they say its a "hungaanu dhooni", but for me it doesnt even look close to a hungaanu dhooni. BUT your explanation sheds a lot of light on to what it actually is. Maaa, great work, it really looks like a gun with the snake.

Maumoon the sick man, follows the greek books, the chinese books.etc etc ..

again gud work

I still think it is a rudder or Hungaanu. Water is flowing down from this monument. I think it is a message Gayoom is giving to his beloved people. It is "Aharen Mihiree Hungaanugai. Dhen Kaleymen Emmen Goru Hadaa!"

I believe that you can bring life to this conspiracy by doing an extensive research on maumoon's life. Some people say that he even prays at sunrise facing opposite of qibla.. And he is said to worship stars.

So your theory is not completely idotic, i suppose.

Thank you dude! Keep going...

my understanding is that the The Steering Wheel of the Ship of this Nation is taken over by a snake which I assume is there holding the wheel for the past 28 years. If we remove the snake from the "hungaanu" the Steering Wheel, we could lead our country to a better direction and look forward for a better future. I dont see 'Republic' in that but i see occupation by a mystic snake worshiper.

You are correct; but the sad thing is this is not the only Boogal he has done. He consults a fung shui master in singapore.

Do you know why he liked to promote environment during early this century. Every tree that was planed around Male was a boogal!

Do you know his lucky number. It's 2. He was born on 29th of December. 2+9=11; 11 is 2. i.e. 1+1 is 2. and he was sworn in on 11th November; and November is the 11th month (again 2) and the ceremony was held at 1100am. He used to have 11 cabinet ministers at one time. The number plate of his car (not now, sometime before) adds upto 2. He has 2 girls and 2 boys. He has 2 balls. And the list goes on..

by Ahmed Rushdie

Two men sitting on a bench near the south-eastern corner of Male are talking.

“I don’t understand this modern art at all,” says one. “What are the long shiny rods supposed to mean?”

“According to what I’ve read in a newspaper recently, those metal rods represent the number of people who died in the tsunami,” the other says.

“What? All of them?”

“According to what I’ve read, yes.”

“And what about the sinuous chain of balls draped around it?”

The first man pauses, narrowing his eyes as he tries to recall. “Erm… theirs, I guess,” he says eventually.

They both enjoy a moment of laughter. Their mirth takes a little while to subside but eventually they manage to compose themselves. After a while the first man says: “Really?”

The two men were, of course, discussing the Tsunami Memorial being built near the seawall on the eastern side of Male and the curiosity and bewilderment it has generated among the locals seem to be growing every day. And this isn’t the first time.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that most Maldivians (with the exception of a small minority) are somewhat symbolically-challenged as far as these modern art pieces are concerned. Years ago, when a particular work of art was unveiled atop a podium inside the roundabout in front of the Sultan’s Park, there was similar confusion among the locals as to exactly what it meant or was supposed to represent. Even now most locals are still undecided and confused about what the monument really depicts or stands for.

“It’s something to do with freedom, right?” said a local named Ahmed Moosa who was taking pictures of his son in front of the monument near Sultan’s Park. “I believe those curvy things around that long thingy in the middle represent the Maldivian man’s effort to break off the shackles of slavery.”

“That was constructed to remember those who died on the high seas when a boat sank with a lot of people in it,” said an elderly old man coming out after attending to his prayers at the Islamic Centre. “It shows the boat sinking into turbulent waters!”

Strangely enough, several others also seemed to be of the opinion that the monument was actually a work of black magic, or sihuru, which had been constructed to keep incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in power. As proof they said they need not look further than the fact that he was still the President. A group of people consisting of two old men and four other middle aged men agreed that the monument “was a symbol of power!” They were also of the opinion that the curving lines of the monument were actually Arabic letters of power and that there was ‘something’ buried under the monument which was actually the source of its power.

“As long as the ‘thing’ remains buried under the statue, no one can topple the current government,” said one of the elderly men, nodding knowingly.

Yet another young man was of the opinion that the monument in front of Sultan’s Park was actually an optical illusion. “You can’t really see what it is from any of the angles available to us,” said the young man who only wanted to be referred to as Hassan. “It will only make sense if you can see it from a very specific angle which will probably only be possible if you were able to fly around it. I myself don’t know what it is, but I have a friend who was there when it had been designed. He said that the design was an optical illusion; it wasn’t really possible to construct it in the three dimensional space of the real world. It does look good on a computer screen and printouts though, like most optical illusions.”

From all this it’s apparent that as far as abstract design, hidden meanings and subtle hints inherent in these modern art pieces are concerned, a lot of Maldivians aren’t really concerned about what they actually represent or the symbolism behind it. It is highly possible that a decade or so later most locals would be of the opinion that the Tsunami Memorial was a stylized representation of ‘Rannamaari’s tooth’, as a schoolgirl from Aminiya jokingly said.

So given this ‘couldn’t care less’ approach of locals towards such monuments, it is surprising that another purposely ambiguous representation is being built to remember the biggest disaster the country has ever faced in its history. As if we really needed a memo for it.

It is not surprising, however, that most locals have no idea what the long standing rods of varying length represent or why it was wearing a ‘necklace of silver balls’. When work had first begun on the site of the Tsunami Monument, a lot of people who frequented the area apparently seemed to believe that Dhiraagu or Focus Infocom were constructing a building to house their submarine cable station on the spot, which probably explains why they are still expecting a huge satellite dish or something similar to appear on top of the tall monument any day.

The Tsunami Monument has also come under a different kind of criticism among those who actually know what it is meant to symbolize. Criticism in a purely aesthetic sense.

“It makes me sad just looking at it,” said Ilham, a graphics designer. “Not because it reminds me of the Tsunami or the lives that were lost in the disaster, but because I can just imagine how a really powerful symbolic representation would have made all the difference. Just imagine if it had been a design that was readily apparent for what it was. This is nothing. If you hadn’t read about how the balls actually represent the twenty atolls of the Maldives and how those steel rods were representations of the people who had died, it wouldn’t invoke the slightest interest or emotion in the average Maldivian. Fact is, even despite the knowledge it fails to evoke anything in me other than a nauseous feeling.”

“Whoever designed the atrocity certainly has no soul,” said a certain local bilingual poet. “This is supposed to be a memorial to a tragic event, yet it stands tall, reaching out to the sky as if it was the best thing that ever happened to us. It just makes me mad thinking about it!”

A local blogger and humorist who goes by the alias of ‘Ali Antenna’ was astonished to hear what the monument really represented. “A memorial to the Tsunami? You have got to be kidding me! Where’s the giant wave then? All this time I thought it was supposed to be a giant dustbin with rotating spherical elevators to take potential litterers to the top to be sacrificed, much like a high tech version of savages throwing virgins into a erupting volcano to appease a fiery deity! I have to say this comes as a huge surprise. But a memorial to the tsunami seems like a good idea. We definitely have forgotten about it these last two years. At least, the government has! Maybe the memorial could be put to better use if it suffered a drastic change of scenery. How about we relocate it to… like say, oh I don’t know, in front of the President’s Palace or Office?”

“What the sculpture really shows is the underlying repressed sexuality of the individual who created it,” said Ibrahim Haleem, a self-proclaimed amateur psychologist. “That’s the conclusion I could derive from it after an initial analysis. The definitely phallic shape, thrusting out from the ground as if to reach the heavens, the distinct virility in its shape and size as if trying to make up for something; you just have to look at it from a distance to see what it really represents and let me tell you, it has nothing to do with the Tsunami. And don’t even get me started on the balls!”

The theories seem as numerous as the victims of the Tsunami the monument is supposed to invoke the memory of. Rannamaari’s tooth, giant phallus or dustbin, only time will tell what future Maldivians make of it.
