Gayom:A superstitious dictator (part two).

if you've ever been in Male' , you must have seen this thing...its that monument?, near hukuru miskiy(the old friday mosque). It is said that earlier there was 2 haruge' (some shed made of wood)....and it is said that they were used for prayer (mainly on fridays when the mosque is already full...and in ramdan...for reciting quran and praying)...but now...gayom have built a little park,a fountain, and this monument here.

what is it?....well..its some thing made of wood....it have 3 sides...or three parts...each of which is an ayah (a verse) of the Quran. Its a single verse written in three directions. the ayah written here is...

transliteration: Inna fatahna laka fathan mubeenan

translation: Verily, We have given you a manifest victory.

This is the first verse of surah al fath ([Quran-48:01] ...see a translation of the sura here ... and a tafsir here). It is said that 'the victory' mentioned in this ayah is a reference to the truce of hudaibiyah.the reason for that (saying it is a victory) was, that... some of the companions of the prophet (including umar bin khattab) had doubts about this pact. So, in this ayah it is said that the pact is indeed a manifest victory(see from tafsir here ....or an explanation here).

ok..thats what it is...but why that ayah? why is it there? when was it made? why was it made? im also not sure about these....it is said that someone made this in an dhivehi masaikaiythering'e mauraz (maldivian craftsmens exhibition) ... but it was kept there by the government of maldives (which was only the gayom).and what was that victory?its more like what an muslim conqueror would build...'granted victory?'..heheheh...

the only victory gayom talks about seems to be 3rd of november 1988.Marked for the thwarting of a
coup plot lead by two Maldivian businessmen (bringing some tamil terrorists from srilanka)..... Indian army came to help, but before that few maldivians were killed and injured in this attack.and then the gayom started boasting of 'his victory' over the terrorists who wanted to 'enslave the people of maldives' and 'build and unislamic society' ...and in a propaganda book released by the government...it is said that the main aim of these maldivians was 'to drink alcohol freely'....ummm..well..its all strange...but thats what many do believe. anyway...from that day onwards....3rd of november is marked as the 'victory day' (of maldives?).
but as sappe says here....why is it november 3rd?and not the 4th?

Sappe' once asked the Gayom :
"Victory Day is not November 3rd, it is the 4th, because we (Maldivians) were not in control of the situation even by midnight that day, so why are you celebrating it on 3rd November?"

Gayom replied: "We have been doing that from the beginning, that is why."

that means ...for no reason....and from that i can say that, it is because he believes that the 3rd of november is the real victory day (for him...atleast).Why? maybe because of that day he got
more powerful,he got some more of peoples trust...and he had a chance to play the 'two minutes hate'...(ya..more like this)...he played it on TV on Radio in News papers...all owned by himself.he had the chance to become a 'hero'.it was his victory day...not ours...atleast..not mine.
or maybe 3rd of november is his lucky day in another way also...he was elected as president for the first 5 year term on 10th of november 1978. so the same year's november 3rd might have been a lucky day for him.God only knows whats the truth about this 'victory day' and 'victory
monument'.an old man who lived in male' told me that he knows that some thing is buried under that monument...and inside that stone part...but im not sure about that either.Any way there is a possibility of it being a 'fanditha' or something like that...Gayom is obsessed with the occult...he is indeed....a very very superstitious dictator....... more to come... ;)

As an Australian with some interest in the Maldives I follow all the politial events with some interest. It seems to me that Gayoom is scared of losing control and that is why the reforms are taking so long. On top of that he is scared of what will happen if people get freedom. Let me try and predict a little of what could happen here. Firstly when people are not used to freedom and they suddenly get it, they are likely to become wild and do a variety of strange things. They will run amuk and probably do a lot of things that were illegal before. That may be part of what Gayoom is scared will happen. However in most societies where there is freedom its not like that permanently because things settle down and life ends up better than before. This will happen in the Maldives. The thing we must remember is that we cannot force peoples allegience to others or to any religion by making laws. People are alwasy moved by the heart and by tradition and creating laws will not change the way people think and feel, but it can cause resentment. It seems to me that resentment is a big factor in the islands at present. So if initially there is a wild backlash against the government, that is probably to be expected, but if real freedom is given, it should probably settle down after that and life will improve for those in the islands.

true...complete holding of freedom and suuden release will lead to some thing more like an explosion...it has happened to the maldivian press also..u see...all there days there were only 3 news papers...one owned by gayom, other by his brother in law...and the other by his best (or one of the closest) friend.there were one TV and one radio...all in his hands. But after several uprisings and protests and international pressure...gayom gave some freedom of press (but still he can arrest who ever he wants when ever he wants...for writing anything). The result was, people started publishing what ever they wanted...the ethics of journalism were not respected and followed.but now again...things have started to settle down a bit, after sometime.
